The Pololu 5V Step Up Boost Voltage Regulator takes an input voltage as low as 0.5V and boosts it up to 5V.
This tiny little board features the U1V11F5 switching step up regulator for maximum efficiency. You can use this tiny module to run your 5V robot logic from as little as 1 AA or AAA battery. And it's breadboard friendly with 0.1" pin spacing.
This regulator has thermal shutdown to protect against overheating. It does not have short-circuit or reverse-voltage protection so please be careful with your wiring. This regulator offers a true shutdown option to turn of power and automatically switches to a linear step down regulator when the input voltage is a bit higher than the output.
The package includes two types of optional header pins that require soldering.
Simply connect the voltage input (VIN) pin to a 0.5-5.5V power source, the ground (GND) pin to the common ground and use the regulated 5V at the output voltage pin (VOUT) to power your project. An optional shutdown pin (SHDN*) can be driven low to turn off power when not needed. The shutdown pin features a built-in pull up resistor so that you can leave it disconnected if you don't need it.
LC Voltage Spikes
When connecting power, the initial rush of current can cause voltage spikes that are much higher than the input voltage. The regulator can be destroyed if the input voltage exceeds the maximum. This can happen when the input voltage is greater than 9V, the power leads are longer than a few inches, or you are using a high impedance power supply. In these cases, please connect a 33uF or larger 16V or higher electrolytic capacitor close to regulator between pins VIN and GND.
